(KTLA-TV / January 14, 2011)

PLAYA VISTA, Calif. ( KTLA) -- Police have shot and killed a man who was seen running naked outside an upscale beach condominium in Playa Vista.

The shooting was reported just after 3 a.m. Friday in the 5600 block of Crescent Way West after LAPD officers responded to a disturbing the peace call.

The man, who apparently took a taxi to the location, began stripping off his clothing and running around naked.

A witness said she heard screaming and commotion outside her window as police chased after the naked suspect. At some point, the suspect put on boxers.

"I heard them try to detain him and he would not comply; and there was a fight, a physical fight," she said.

She then heard two gunshots.

The suspect, in his 30s, was struck and rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

The man's identity has not been released. Police say he was a resident of the condominium complex.

There's no word on what prompted officers to open fire.

The shooting is under investigation.

Two officers were injured during the struggle. Their conditions were not immediately known.

more at www.playavistatoday.com

Playa Vista:
93 Playa Vista condos have sold in 2010 - On paper some seemed like phenomenal deals, however, those that visited the least expensive homes saw some serious problems like smoke damage, extremely dark, filthy or damaged. Those buyers willing to do renovation can get deals, but it's cautioned that renovations can be expensive. More here

Primera Terra newest properties Pre-sales anticipated 2011 - Modern single level loft condominiums with spacious and open floor plans by KB Homes.

Percent of Americans likely to rent their next home grows, survey indicates -Southern California housing market weakens in October. The mortgage financing company's chief economist, Doug Duncan, used the word to headline his analysis of Fannie Mae's new national survey of public attitudes about housing. What it found shouldn't surprise anybody who has paid any attention to home sales: Consumers feel cautious about home buying. Story here

Culver City Market Update - The news continues to be positive for the real estate market in Culver City, the number of homes selling, the price they are selling at, the difference between the list price and the final sales price are all solidly running at the same pace they have pretty much all year.
First Look: Vü Restaurant in Marina Del Rey

When Vü Restaurant opens on December 1st, chef Kyle Schutte hopes to inject, aerate and freeze-dry a little flare into a notoriously stodgy dining category: the hotel restaurant. His "gateway dish"? Chicken-fried watermelon.

After a year-long renovation, the Jamaica Bay Inn in Marina del Rey reopens this Saturday, November 20th. Two weeks later, its in-house restaurant opens. Despite the awkward name, Vü (pronounced not like TV pitchman Tom Vu's surname but like "view," as in "a room with a") has an ambitious concept and in 28-year-old Schutte an inventive new chef.

The southern transplant spent his culinary career in Atlanta (One Midtown Kitchen) and the Charlotte suburbs (XO Restaurant and Lounge). Since July, Schutte has been glorying in L.A.'s farmers markets and planning, during the height of summer's abundance, Vü's fall and winter menu.

?Attempting to balance culinary parlor tricks with traditional fare, the menu has five sections: charcuterie, crudos, cold small plates, hot small plates and entrées. The entrees offer the tamest fare, while the rest of the menu features oddities like a lobster-tail ceviche with Fritos and popcorn Jell-O; bison carpaccio; and hamachi with collard greens fluid gel.

There's a deconstructed potato salad made with fingerling potatoes, white wine vinegar jellies, toasted celery seeds and carrot glass (that would be carrot juice that's dehydrated into thin orange sheets). It's matched by a reconstructed caprese salad made with cherry tomatoes that are peeled, injected with a balsamic pudding and wrapped in a basil-infused mozzarella.

For those who would skeptically eye such concoctions, Schutte has an answer: chicken-fried watermelon, the dish that may have earned him the job at Vü. Schutte dips watermelon cubes in buttermilk batter and seasoned flour then fries them and tops them with pickled watermelon rind. Schutte thinks the familiar blend of southern technique applied in an unlikely manner will convert skeptics.

"If you can't relate to the food, there's no point in serving it," Schutte says. "Every good dish, whether you get it from McDonalds or the French laundry, it should transport you."

Vu Restaurant
14160 Palawan Way

More Here
93 Playa Vista condos have sold in 2010
On paper some seemed like phenomenal deals, however, those that visited the least expensive homes saw some serious problems like smoke damage, extremely dark, filthy or damaged. Those buyers willing to do renovation can get deals, but it's cautioned that renovations can be expensive. It's suggested that buyers get bids before they place their offers. Needless to say these homes and sadly many more were short sales or foreclosures.

If a buyer purchases a foreclosure typically the HOA back fees are wiped out. In a short sale these liens have to be satisfied before a closing and usually the buyer is the one who has to front this bill. It's possible that agents can negotiate with some buildings so the back HOA are reduced and late fines dismissed. The Community Enhancement Fee, a cost the seller usually pays, is always billed. If this is not paid at closing the current buyer will be billed. On occasion the the banks might split this fee with the buyer.

More here
The new owner of the aircraft giant's former headquarters, including the hangar where the Spruce Goose was built, plans to turn it into an office campus for media, entertainment and tech firms.
The decaying former headquarters of aviation giant Howard Hughes will be turned into an office campus for creative tenants as part of a $50-million makeover of the famous operation at Playa Vista.
The complex includes the enormous hangar where Hughes built his infamous Spruce Goose airplane but is now used mostly as a sound stage for movie and television production. The seven-story structure will be upgraded to contain five sound stages that could be used simultaneously, new owner Wayne Ratkovich said.

LAX will soon have dining options beyond McDonalds. Los Angeles World Airports has created a phasing plan in conjunction with LAX’s concessionaires to minimize impact to passengers during the overhaul that will replace existing retailers and eateries in some terminals over the next year.

After a two-year long process aimed at providing travelers with better vendors and restaurants, the Los Angeles City Council awarded nine retail contracts for the Los Angeles International Airport in a 12-1 vote last week.

In September, the city’s Board of Referred Powers evaluated eight contracts due to protests that arose from a perceived conflict of interest involving the chairman of the Board of Airport Commissioners, Alan Rothenberg, who maintains some stock in a restaurant that was included in the bidding contracts. Protesters argued that the chairman’s stock with the California Pizza Kitchen, estimated at over $1 million dollars, was indicative of a conflict of interest. In a subsequent investigation, HMS Host International’s contract, which included the California Pizza Kitchen, was thrown out.

The Board of Referred Powers approved four of the five food and beverage bids and three retail bids. The Board of Airport Commissioners approved two remaining retail packages and the City Council approved nine of the 10 packages last week in a 12-1 vote.

“Bad policy tends to be done in a rush," contended Tony Cardenas, the chairman of the Board of Referred Powers and sole dissenter. Cardenas argued that more time was needed to carefully consider the ten-year deal and said contracts should have been sent back to LAX officials.

But proponents of the new concessions argue concerns over the contracts were carefully considered and that the process to approve them has been thorough.

The Los Angeles World Airports said they are working with the concessionaries to implement the new changes while minimizing inconvenience to LAX’s travelers.

“We will be working with each of the concessionaires to design spaces to optimize food prep, selling and eating spaces while creating aisles with sufficient space to wheel luggage through the units,” said Amy Shaw, Director of Concessions Development for Los Angeles World
Airports. “Wherever possible, concessionaires will install multiple cash registers to quickly process transactions and reduce the long lines that queue into public spaces during peak times.”

Airport officials said that during construction some retailers will provide goods through temporary units, such as wall units for retail products and installation of refrigerated cases for pre-packaged food and beverage goods.

The Hudson-Magic Johnson Enterprises, a partnership between the former Los Angeles Lakers star, the Hudson Group and Concourse Ventures was a major winner in the concession approvals.

Popular brand shops will include Sunglass Hut, Hugo Boss, Papyrus, True Religion, Ed Hardy and Oakley.

Dining options, which have long been lamented as mediocre at LAX, will feature outlets operated by celebrity chefs, including Ford’s Filling Station, Skewers by Iron Chef Morimoto and Wolfgang Puck.

Other popular Los Angeles dining, such as Engine Company No. 28 and B Grill by BOA Steakhouse, will also replace existing restaurants.

A version of Homegirl Café, inspired by the café run by Homeboy Industries, a charity for former gang members, is also among the new beverage concessions.

Terminals 4, 5, 7 and 8 will be impacted by the awarded retail contracts. Contractual opportunities for terminals 1, 2, 3, 6 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal are expected to begin in three months.

Some outlets will open within the first six months of 2011, according to Shaw. Some of the larger restaurants are set to begin renovations mid-year and expected to be completed at the end of 2011.
Kyle Schutte Brings Buffalo Carpaccio and Crudo to Jamaica Bay Inn, Open Next Month in Marina Del Rey

Kyle Schutte, a Southern chef who refers to his early years using multiple variations of "bitch" in his bio (as in "prep bitch," "pantry bitch," "brunch bitch," etc.), has worked under Richard Blais and Tom Harvey, and most recently headed up the kitchen at North Carolina's XO Lounge and Tapas Bar. Now, the chef is headed westward, coming to open the restaurant Vu in Marina del Rey's. Vu will be the signature restaurant of forthcoming Jamaica Bay Inn, taking over the neighborhood's Best Western with a brand-new colonial-style West Indies feel that's been in the works for the last year. But despite the name and look, don't necessarily expect salt-cod patties, kushumpeng tea, or scotch bonnet-spiced jerk chicken here. So, what will Schutte serve instead?

The under-construction 150-seat, indoor-outdoor restaurant will match its beach views with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, focusing on Cali-grown produce, ranch-sourced meats, and local seafood. Breakfast will include the usual fresh fruit and farm-driven omelets, while lunch will feature salads, soups, and sandwiches.

Dinner gets a little more inspired, with selections of such currently en vogue eats as a list of crudo, cured meats, and artisan cheese. Schutte's dishes will include such creations as lamb "lollipops" poached in sweet tea with roasted grape relish, a reconstructed caprese, and free-range bison carpaccio sourced from Montana, along with a Pacific Coast wine list and handcrafted cocktails. Should be head-and-shoulders above whatever was served at the Best Western it's replacing and a boost to Marina Del Rey's sustainable dining scene.

Vu will open in November and start taking reservations on December 1st at, 4175 Admiralty Way. Marina del Rey. 310-823-5333.
